FIFA President Gianni Infantino has held discussions with Nigeria’s National Sports Commission Chairman, Shehu Dikko, and a Nigerian delegation on strengthening football development and governance in the country.
Infantino said the meeting, held at the Home of FIFA in Zurich, focused on institutional, governance and developmental issues, as well as ongoing collaboration between FIFA and Nigeria.
In a statement posted on his official Instagram account, Infantino said:
“I was pleased to sit down with a delegation from Nigeria, led by National Sports Commission (NSC) Chairman Shehu Dikko, at the Home of FIFA in Zürich to hold important discussions and align on our vision for football in the country.”
He said the delegation held “detailed” discussions on the structures supporting football in Nigeria and areas where further development is needed.
“We had a detailed talk on institutional, governance and developmental topics, as well as our ongoing collaborations,” Infantino said.
The FIFA president stressed the importance of establishing stronger structures and clearer pathways to create more opportunities for young Nigerians seeking to pursue careers in football.
“While stressing the need to create stronger structures and pathways to provide even more opportunities for the youth, we explored areas where FIFA can further support the growth of our beautiful game in this football-passionate country,” he said.
Infantino also expressed his support for Nigeria’s women’s national youth teams ahead of their upcoming international competitions.
“I also wished luck to @ng_superfalcons for the upcoming FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup and the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup,” he said.
He thanked the Nigerian delegation for its engagement and expressed optimism about continued cooperation to advance football in the country.
“I thanked the entire team for their time, ideas and positive intent to work together in taking Nigerian football forward,” Infantino added.
