Several ambitious Republicans are positioning themselves for a possible challenge to US Vice President JD Vance in the 2028 presidential election, following significant Republican losses in Tuesday’s elections.
Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has embarked on a media blitz in recent days as he prepares for a potential presidential run, according to three people briefed on his plans.
Georgia Governor Brian Kemp is also weighing a presidential bid, a person familiar with his plans has said.
Meanwhile, Texas Senator Ted Cruz is planning to work with longtime political consultant Jeff Roe of Axiom Strategies if he decides to enter the race, according to two people familiar with his thinking.
The individuals, alongside others interviewed for the report, spoke on condition of anonymity to discuss private conversations.
The growing interest in challenging Vance comes as questions emerge over the future direction of President Donald Trump’s Republican Party following the party’s poor electoral performance.
With Vance yet to decide whether to seek the presidency in 2028, potential rivals believe the Republican losses have created an opportunity to challenge the sitting vice president.
Vance also faces the challenge of distinguishing himself from Trump, whose declining popularity could complicate his prospects of securing the Republican presidential nomination.
The contest is expected to shape not only who becomes the Republican Party’s next presidential standard-bearer but also the party’s political direction in the post-Trump era.
