FG Begins Reconstruction of Carter Bridge in Lagos

Federal Government flags off reconstruction of Carter Bridge in Lagos, describing the project as critical to improving transport infrastructure and easing traffic flow in the commercial capital.

The Federal Government has officially commenced the reconstruction of Carter Bridge in Lagos, formally handing over the project to the China Civil Engineering Construction Corporation (CCECC).

The flag-off ceremony took place on Wednesday at Carter Bridge, with the Minister of Works, Senator Dave Umahi, leading government officials and stakeholders at the launch of the project.

Umahi described the reconstruction as a major infrastructure intervention aimed at improving safety, traffic flow and connectivity within Lagos, Nigeria’s commercial hub.

The minister said the project forms part of the Federal Government’s broader commitment to rehabilitating critical transport infrastructure across the country.

He also stressed the importance of durable road and bridge construction standards, noting that the government remains focused on delivering long-lasting infrastructure capable of supporting economic growth and rising urban traffic demands.

Representing Senate President Godswill Akpabio at the event, Senator Ngwu Osita commended the Federal Government for prioritising strategic infrastructure projects, describing the reconstruction as vital to the economic life of Lagos and the nation.

Chairman of the House of Representatives Committee on Works, Akin Alabi, also praised the intervention, saying the reconstruction would help address longstanding structural and traffic concerns associated with the bridge.

The Carter Bridge project is expected to improve mobility within Lagos Island and adjoining areas while supporting commercial activities and easing transportation challenges for commuters.

The Federal Government recently disclosed that structural assessments showed the bridge required comprehensive reconstruction to meet modern engineering and safety standards.

The project is one of several ongoing infrastructure initiatives under the Ministry of Works aimed at modernising federal roads and bridges nationwide.
