Egypt secured their first 2026 World Cup victory after coming from behind to defeat New Zealand 3-1, with Mohamed Salah scoring one goal and creating another in a memorable win for the Pharaohs.
The result also leaves Egypt on the brink of reaching the knockout stage for the first time in their history, as Hossam Hassan’s side moved to the top of Group G.
New Zealand made the brighter start and took the lead in the 15th minute when Finn Surman headed home Tim Payne’s well placed corner, raising hopes of a first World Cup victory for the All Whites.
However, the Kiwis were unable to hold onto their advantage, having already surrendered leads twice in their opening draw against Iran.
Egypt responded strongly after the break following tactical adjustments from manager Hossam Hassan.
Mostafa Zico, named after the legendary Brazilian footballer, levelled the score in the 58th minute when he headed home Mohamed Hany’s cross.
Salah then combined brilliantly with Zico, playing a neat one two inside the penalty area before firing into the bottom corner to put Egypt ahead.
The former Liverpool forward completed a standout performance by delivering a corner for substitute Trezeguet, who headed home Egypt’s third goal in the 82nd minute.
The victory, Egypt’s first in four World Cup appearances since making their tournament debut in 1934, means they will finish top of the group if they defeat Iran on Saturday.
For New Zealand, the wait for a first World Cup victory continues, and they must beat Belgium in their final group match to keep their hopes of progression alive.
