Cabo Verde goalkeeper Vozinha has become the first viral sensation of the 2026 FIFA World Cup after a heroic display against Spain sent his Instagram following soaring from 56,000 to 6.3 million overnight.
The 40-year-old shot-stopper, whose full name is Josimar Dias Vozinha, produced one of the tournament’s standout performances to help World Cup debutants Cabo Verde secure a stunning 0-0 draw against tournament favourites Spain on Monday.
For 90 unforgettable minutes in Atlanta, Vozinha was unbeatable.
Spain dominated possession and launched 27 shots, seven of them on target, but could not find a way past the veteran goalkeeper. Even when Spanish stars Lamine Yamal and Nico Williams were introduced from the bench, they failed to break Cabo Verde’s resistance.
Vozinha dazzled with reflex stops, diving saves and a magnificent early denial of Pedri. He also confidently smothered several long-range efforts as Spain grew increasingly frustrated.
When the final whistle sounded, the goalkeeper broke down in tears after helping Cabo Verde secure the first World Cup point in the nation’s history in its debut appearance at the tournament.
The result was one of the biggest shocks of the World Cup so far, but the reaction off the pitch proved just as remarkable.
Shortly after the match, he gained an extraordinary surge in followers. His audience jumped from 56,000 to one million within minutes of the final whistle before racing past 6.3 million within hours, with the number continuing to climb.
His performance earned him the Player of the Match award and widespread praise across the football world.
An emotional Vozinha reflected on the achievement after the game.
“I worked all my life for this, for this moment, for this dream,” he said in a post-match interview.
“For me, it’s an honour to represent the country I love.”
Vozinha, the oldest player to make his debut in a World Cup match and the oldest goalkeeper to keep a clean sheet on a FIFA World Cup debut, also reflected on the long road that led him to football’s biggest stage.
“I am 40 now, but I was not a professional up until I was 25.
“This is a reward for all this journey.”
