Chelsea are expected to confirm the appointment of Xabi Alonso as the club’s new head coach within the next 24 hours after agreeing terms on a four-year contract, sources told ESPN.
The 44-year-old has been out of work since leaving Real Madrid in January following a brief spell in charge at the Bernabéu. Chelsea moved quickly to make Alonso their preferred candidate after dismissing Liam Rosenior last month.
Chelsea have been led on an interim basis by Calum McFarlane in recent weeks, with the club also considering Andoni Iraola and Marco Silva during the search process.
Sources said Alonso held discussions with Chelsea owners, BlueCo regarding the club’s transfer strategy and managerial authority before accepting the role.
The former Liverpool midfielder is expected to be unveiled before Tuesday’s Premier League clash against Tottenham Hotspur at Stamford Bridge and could take charge of the team for the match.
