Nigerian Afrobeats superstar Wizkid has become the first African artist to surpass 11 billion total streams on Spotify across all credited appearances, further consolidating his status as one of the continent’s most commercially successful global music exports.
The milestone was announced on Tuesday by music analytics platform Charts Africa via X, where it highlighted Wizkid’s continued dominance in African streaming history on Spotify.
According to Charts Africa, Wizkid remains the first African artist to reach several major cumulative streaming thresholds on Spotify, including one billion, two billion, 10 billion, and now 11 billion total streams.
The latest achievement comes just days after the release of State of Mind, his collaboration with DJ Tunez, which debuted on May 15, 2026. The single reportedly generated more than 685,000 global Spotify streams within its first full day on the platform, adding fresh momentum to Wizkid’s already extensive streaming catalogue.
The development further underscores the growing international commercial strength of Afrobeats, a genre that has steadily transformed Nigerian musicians into leading figures in the global digital music economy.
Wizkid’s rise on Spotify has also been linked to several historic milestones for African music on streaming platforms. He was part of the first song in Spotify history involving an African artist to surpass one billion streams, through his collaboration with Drake and Kyla on One Dance.
In recent years, other African artists have also broken major streaming barriers. Rema became the first African lead artist to achieve a one-billion-stream Spotify record with Calm Down, while Tems became the first African female artist associated with a song reaching one billion Spotify streams.
Similarly, Tyla became the first African solo artist to surpass one billion Spotify streams with Water, reflecting the widening global reach of African pop music beyond Nigeria.
The latest milestone also follows another significant streaming achievement involving Wizkid earlier in 2026. In January, it was reported that Wizkid and Asake made African music history with their collaboration Jogodo, which became the fastest African song to reach 10 million Spotify streams, achieving the feat in under a week.
Data tracked by Charts Africa at the time showed that the track recorded one of the fastest streaming growth rates ever achieved by an African release on the platform.
The sustained rise in streaming figures reflects the expanding global influence of African music on major digital platforms, where Nigerian artists continue to dominate Afrobeats consumption metrics.
Spotify has previously acknowledged the growing international appeal of Nigerian music and its strong engagement among younger audiences.
In 2022, Spotify’s Head of Music for Sub-Saharan Africa, Phiona Okumu, identified Burna Boy, Asake, Davido, Drake, and Wizkid as the five most-streamed artists among Nigeria’s Gen Z audience.
