UK Competition Watchdog Investigates Microsoft Over 365 Subscription Practices

Britain’s competition watchdog investigates whether Microsoft misled Microsoft 365 customers into paying more through its subscription marketing practices.

Britain’s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) has launched an investigation into Microsoft’s marketing of its Microsoft 365 subscription services over concerns that consumers may have been misled into paying more than necessary.

The regulator said it will examine whether Microsoft presented its subscription plans in a way that encouraged personal and family customers to choose or remain on more expensive Microsoft 365 subscriptions without fully understanding the alternatives available.

The inquiry will assess whether consumers were provided with clear and transparent information about subscription pricing, renewal terms and the range of plans before making purchasing decisions.

The CMA is also examining whether Microsoft’s sales and marketing practices encouraged customers to stay on higher-priced plans or upgrade to more expensive subscriptions without sufficient information to make informed choices.

The investigation forms part of the watchdog’s broader efforts to ensure digital subscription services operate fairly and transparently while protecting consumers from potentially misleading commercial practices.

If the regulator determines that Microsoft breached UK consumer protection rules, the company could be required to change the way it markets and manages its Microsoft 365 subscription services in Britain.

The investigation remains in its early stages as the CMA gathers evidence and reviews Microsoft’s subscription practices. Microsoft has not publicly commented on the regulator’s decision to open the probe.
