Trump Weighs In On Burnham, Labels Him As ‘Extremely Liberal’

US President Trump downplays Andy Burnham’s leadership prospects, describing the Greater Manchester mayor as extremely liberal.

US President Donald Trump has offered his first public reaction to speculation surrounding Andy Burnham’s potential bid for the UK premiership, dismissing the Greater Manchester mayor as “the mayor of a town” and describing him as “extremely liberal.”

Trump made the remarks when asked about Burnham, who has recently emerged as a prominent figure in discussions about the future leadership of the Labour Party and a possible successor to Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer.

The comments came after Burnham, while campaigning during the Makerfield by-election, argued that Britain should avoid what he described as the “polarised, poisonous politics” associated with the United States.

Responding to questions about Burnham’s political prospects, Trump appeared to downplay the significance of the former Greater Manchester mayor on the national stage.

“He’s the mayor of a town,” Trump said, adding that he had heard Burnham was “extremely liberal.”

The remarks mark the first time the US president has publicly commented on Burnham amid growing political debate over Labour’s future direction and leadership.

Burnham, a former cabinet minister and long-serving Labour politician, has gained national prominence through his role as Mayor of Greater Manchester and his advocacy on issues including transport, devolution and regional economic development.

His recent criticism of divisive political rhetoric in the United States has fuelled discussion about his political ambitions and whether he could eventually seek Labour’s top job.

Trump’s intervention is likely to attract attention on both sides of the Atlantic, given the former president’s history of outspoken commentary on international political figures and movements.

While Burnham has not formally declared any intention to seek the Labour leadership, he remains one of the party’s most recognisable figures outside Westminster and is frequently mentioned in discussions about its future leadership options.
