Trump Announces Major Resource Exploration Plans For Greenland

The US president links Greenland’s oil and mineral wealth to plans for expanded military defences in the Arctic territory.

US President Donald Trump has announced plans for large-scale oil, gas and mineral exploration in Greenland, describing the island as having vast untapped energy resources.

In a post on Truth Social on Wednesday, Trump offered no details about the proposed exploration but cited experts who he said believed Greenland had more easily accessible oil than almost anywhere else in the world.

“There are experts that are saying that the amount of easily available oil is far greater than that of almost any land, anywhere in the world,” Trump wrote.

His announcement comes after the United States, Denmark and Greenland signed an agreement last month intended to ease tensions following repeated threats by Trump to take control of the strategically located, mineral-rich island.

Trump also pointed to Greenland’s importance to US national security, arguing that the territory would serve as a critical line of defence against potential attacks.

“Any future attack on the United States will have to come across Greenland, where our Defense will routinely knock down drones, missiles, or any other form of weapon not yet even conceived,” he said.

The agreement expands the US military’s role in Greenland, allowing for two new military bases and paving the way for Trump’s proposed “Golden Dome” missile defence system.

But, the deal also reaffirms Danish sovereignty over Greenland and the right of Greenlanders to determine their own future.
