Tenerife Striker Jesus De Miguel Dies After Suffering Serious Injuries During Match

Tenerife striker Jesus de Miguel, 30, dies after suffering serious head and chest injuries in a collision during a Spanish second-division match.

Spanish football club CD Tenerife has announced the death of striker Jesus de Miguel, who died at the age of 30 after suffering serious injuries during a Spanish second-division match.

De Miguel sustained head and chest injuries following a heavy collision with FC Andorra goalkeeper Jesus Owono during their match on Monday at Tenerife’s Estadio Heliodoro Rodriguez Lopez.

The incident occurred seven minutes into stoppage time, with both teams level at 2-2, when Owono rushed towards the centre circle to clear a long ball and collided with the striker.

De Miguel was left motionless on the pitch and received emergency medical attention before being transported by ambulance to hospital. Owono was shown a straight red card for the challenge, while the referee subsequently abandoned the match.

Although the striker’s condition was initially described as stable but serious on Monday, his health deteriorated on Tuesday morning. He died at approximately 07:00 GMT.

Spanish media, including Marca, reported that De Miguel suffered a cardiac arrest in the ambulance but was resuscitated by paramedics before arriving at the hospital.

In a statement announcing his death, Tenerife expressed deep sorrow, saying there were no words to describe the loss and extending its condolences to his family, loved ones and supporters.

FC Andorra also expressed condolences to De Miguel’s family, teammates, friends and Tenerife, while former Barcelona defender and Andorra co-owner Gerard Pique paid tribute to the striker, saying he was deeply sorry and wished him eternal rest.

Other tributes came from his former club Castellon, La Liga president Javier Tebas and Real Madrid and France striker Kylian Mbappe, who expressed sadness over his death.

Following the announcement, the Spanish Football Federation postponed Tuesday’s scheduled Copa del Rey first-round fixtures, as well as a women’s Copa de la Reina match between Espanyol and AS Celtas.

De Miguel began his professional career at Leganes in 2015 and subsequently represented several Spanish clubs, including Lugo, Fuenlabrada, Internacional Madrid, Union Adarve, Navalcarnero and Unionistas.

He joined Castellon in 2023, scoring 16 goals as the club secured promotion to Spain’s second division the following year.

The striker moved to Tenerife in 2025 on a three-year contract and scored 11 goals in 29 appearances for the club.

De Miguel is survived by his daughter, Carla de Miguel Fernandez, who was born in 2025.
