Nigerian singer Tems has secured the “Best African Music Performance” award at the 67th Grammy Awards for her song “Love Me JeJe.” The prestigious ceremony took place in the early hours of Monday at the Crypto.com Arena in Los Angeles, United States.
Tems triumphed over a competitive field of nominees, including fellow Nigerian superstars Yemi Alade, Asake, Wizkid, Davido, Lojay, and Burna Boy, to claim the coveted award.
Expressing her gratitude during her acceptance speech, the elated singer said, “Wow, dear God. Thank you so much for putting me on this stage and bringing me this team.” She dedicated the win to her mother, whose birthday falls the following day, saying, “Tomorrow is my mum’s birthday, and this is her first Grammys. I just want to thank you, ma, because she has really done a lot for me and my brother. Happy birthday, mum.”
She also extended her appreciation to her team, mentioning Muyiwa, Wale, her stylist, and close associates, adding, “And I want to thank my team. Muyiwa, Wale, my beautiful stylist, and lovely girls… I love you guys. Thank you so much. To God be the glory. Honestly, He has changed my life so much.”
Despite her win, Tems lost in two other categories—“Best R&B Song,” which went to American singer SZA, and “Best Global Music Album,” where her project “Born in the Wild” was edged out by “Alkebulan II” by Matt B featuring the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra. Nigerian artist Rema was also nominated in the category for his album “Heis.”
This marks Tems’ second Grammy Award. In 2023, she won “Best Melodic Rap Performance” for her contribution to “Wait for U,” a hit song by Future featuring Drake.
Her latest achievement cements her status as a leading force in global music, further solidifying Afrobeats’ presence on the world stage.
