A 13-year-old died and two people were injured after part of a fountain collapsed during celebrations of Spain’s World Cup victory in the western Spanish city of Ciudad Rodrigo early on Monday.
The accident happened shortly after midnight at the Arbol Gordo fountain, where hundreds of residents had gathered to celebrate Spain’s second World Cup triumph. Emergency services said the upper section of the monument broke loose and fell onto the crowd.
The incident occurred in Ciudad Rodrigo, a medieval walled city of about 12,000 people in Salamanca province near the Portuguese border.
In a statement, Ciudad Rodrigo’s town hall expressed condolences to the victim’s family, saying the entire city was mourning the loss.
“What should have been a celebration of the Spanish national team’s World Cup victory has turned into a tragedy,” the statement said.
