Sweden has announced its intention to support international efforts to increase weapons deliveries to Ukraine, following a major US decision to provide billions of dollars’ worth of arms through NATO channels—including the deployment of advanced Patriot missile systems.
Swedish Defence Minister Pål Jonson welcomed the move in a statement to Reuters, highlighting the significance of Washington’s renewed military commitment to Kyiv.
“We welcome the American decision to make possible increased sanctions against Russia and to pave the way for the delivery of Patriots and other weapon systems to Ukraine,” Jonson said in an emailed comment.
“Sweden will contribute,” he added, though he did not specify the nature or scale of the support.
The US decision, driven by President Donald Trump’s administration, marks a notable reinforcement of Western backing for Ukraine as it faces ongoing Russian aggression. Sweden’s pledge adds to a growing coalition of NATO and European countries working to bolster Ukraine’s defence capabilities amid a prolonged and costly conflict.
Details of Sweden’s military support package are expected in the coming weeks as coordination continues among NATO allies.
