Keir Starmer has officially resigned as the United Kingdom’s prime minister, declaring that “my work is done” in his final address before leaving Downing Street and handing over power to his successor, Andy Burnham.
Reflecting on his time in office, Starmer said he was leaving with pride over his government’s achievements.
He added that “I go with good grace, I go with a smile and I go proud of everything that we have achieved.”
Starmer also wished the incoming prime minister well, saying Burnham had his “full support” as he prepared to take office.
Following his farewell speech, Starmer travelled to Buckingham Palace to formally tender his resignation to King Charles.
Confirming the development, Buckingham Palace said: “Sir Keir Starmer MP had an audience of The King this morning and tendered his resignation as Prime Minister and First Lord of the Treasury which His Majesty was graciously pleased to accept.”
The palace added: “Lady Starmer was also received by The King.”
Burnham, who became Labour leader on Friday, is expected to deliver his first speech as prime minister after completing the formal handover of power at Buckingham Palace.
The new prime minister is also expected to begin reshaping his government by appointing and dismissing ministers, with prisons minister Lord Timpson having resigned earlier in the day.
