Andy Burnham will officially become the United Kingdom’s prime minister today, replacing Keir Starmer and pledging to usher in a period of political stability and provide “more breathing room” for the British people.
Burnham is expected to deliver his first address outside 10 Downing Street after he and outgoing Prime Minister Keir Starmer visit King Charles III at Buckingham Palace, marking the formal transfer of power.
In his inaugural speech, Burnham is expected to promise more breathing room for Britain while arguing for a more stable and responsible style of politics.
Starmer will deliver his final address as prime minister before formally handing over office. Burnham, who emerged as Labour leader on Friday, is expected to outline his government’s priorities, with speculation growing over potential policy announcements, including a possible income tax cut.
The leadership transition means Britain will have its fifth prime minister in four years, highlighting the country’s recent political volatility.
Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch congratulated Burnham on assuming office but questioned whether he was prepared for the task ahead.
While wishing the new prime minister every success, Badenoch warned that he was entering Downing Street without any clear plan.
Echoing that criticism, Conservative shadow cabinet minister Alex Burghart said voters were still unclear about Burnham’s agenda.
Speaking in an interview, Burghart said, “The country doesn’t ‘really know’ about Andy Burnham’s plan, adding that the new Labour leader had conducted only a few interviews and taken very few questions.”
He further argued that many of Burnham’s early policy proposals appeared expensive and questioned how they would be funded.
“It sounds to me that a lot of things he has floated so far cost a lot of money. That means you need to find the money from somewhere else.”
