South Sudan has informed the administration of US President Donald Trump that it is open to accepting a greater number of migrants deported from the United States, Politico reported on Wednesday, citing diplomatic correspondence and sources familiar with the discussions.
The gesture is part of a broader diplomatic effort to improve ties with Washington, which have been strained in recent years over human rights concerns and ongoing political instability in the East African nation.
According to the report, South Sudan has also called on the US to lift sanctions imposed on one of its senior officials. The identity of the official was not disclosed, but US sanctions on South Sudanese leaders have typically targeted individuals accused of fuelling conflict or obstructing peace efforts in the country.
The proposal reflects South Sudan’s interest in easing tensions with the United States, particularly as it seeks international support ahead of its planned elections and struggles with humanitarian challenges at home.
It remains unclear whether Washington will respond positively to South Sudan’s overture or reconsider its current sanctions policy.
