Security operatives, supported by local vigilantes, have repelled a suspected terrorist attack on Oro-Ago community in Ifelodun Local Government Area of Kwara State, averting what residents feared could have been a mass kidnapping.
The incident occurred on Monday night as residents were preparing to retire for the day, triggering panic across the community as reports emerged of armed men advancing toward the town.
Sources said residents quickly alerted security agencies and local vigilante groups through distress calls, prompting a swift response.
Upon arrival, a combined team of police operatives, soldiers of the Nigerian Army, and vigilantes engaged the attackers in a brief confrontation, opening fire and forcing them to retreat into nearby forests.
A local source, who spoke on condition of anonymity, said the coordinated response prevented a major security breach.
“The bandits have run away. For now, there is no report of any kidnapping. They have been chased out of the town, and security operatives are pursuing them,” the source said.
Residents noted that the quick mobilisation of security personnel following their alerts played a crucial role in averting potential casualties and abductions.
Confirming the incident, a senior police officer at the Ifelodun Divisional Police Headquarters in Share said the joint efforts of security agencies and vigilantes successfully neutralised the threat.
“The swift response helped to stop what might have resulted in another mass kidnapping in Oro-Ago,” the officer said.
He also commended members of the community for promptly reporting the suspicious movements, noting that such cooperation is critical to effective security operations.
Although calm has returned to the area, security personnel have continued patrols and are reportedly pursuing the fleeing attackers.
