Director of the Abuja School of Social and Political Thought, Dr. Sam Amadi, says the debate surrounding the Osun State governorship election has focused more on winning and electoral advantage than on the development of the state.
Speaking during an interview with ARISE News on Wednesday, Amadi said issues of development, including road construction and the performance of the incumbent administration, had been overshadowed by concerns about securing votes, political influence, security and the quality of the election.
He said the central concern appeared to have shifted from which candidate could best serve Osun State to which candidate had the political machinery, resources and influence required to win the election.
“So, winning and winnability, and all it takes, all the dark art of winning, was front and center of that conversation,” Amadi said.
Amadi said the development debate had featured competing claims between the APC candidate and the incumbent administration over whether the state government had performed well.
He stated that greater attention was being paid to allegations of federal interference, particularly involving security agencies and INEC, as politicians and voters prepared for the election.
He said the situation risked making electoral victory, rather than governance and public interest, the dominant focus of the contest.
According to Amadi, the key question for voters should be which candidate has the capacity to serve Osun effectively, rather than which candidate possesses the resources and political influence to secure victory.
