Ryan Gosling is set to join the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Ghost Rider, with Marvel Studios confirming the actor will portray the iconic supernatural superhero in a film scheduled for release in 2028.
The surprise announcement was made by Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige during the 2026 San Diego Comic-Con, where he teased fans before unveiling Gosling on stage to loud applause.
Addressing the crowd, Gosling said: “Wow. Is this really happening?” He added that he had wanted to play Ghost Rider for “a very long time.”
Marvel also confirmed that filmmaker Shawn Levy will direct the project. Levy revealed that discussions about the film began while he and Gosling were working together on Star Wars: Starfighter.
“And finally, I was like: Bro, let’s ride,” Levy told fans during the panel.
Ghost Rider first appeared in Marvel comics in 1967 before the Johnny Blaze version of the character debuted in 1972. The antihero becomes the Spirit of Vengeance after making a pact with Satan, transforming into a flaming-skulled vigilante at night.
The character previously appeared on the big screen in 2007 and 2011, with Nicolas Cage starring as Johnny Blaze.
Gosling’s casting ends years of speculation among Marvel fans, many of whom had long campaigned for the Oscar-nominated actor to take on the role in the MCU.
