Nigeria’s ambassador-designate to Mexico, Reno Omokri, has responded after Afrobeats star Davido referred to him as “Bingo” in a now-viral social media post.
The exchange began after Omokri suggested that his delayed resumption in Mexico was linked to the ongoing World Cup. Davido, reacting on social media, criticised the former presidential aide in strong terms, writing: “Umu Bingo @renoomokri fowl,” in a post that has since generated widespread reactions online.
In response, Omokri described Davido’s message as unexpected and characterised it as feedback, while also expressing surprise at the tone of the singer’s remarks. Sharing screenshots of the post on his Instagram page on Tuesday, he suggested that Davido’s reaction stemmed from his earlier criticism of the singer’s appearance at a global sporting event.
Omokri wrote:“Dear Mr. David Adeleke AKA Davido, thank you for your feedback. I was rather surprised by your response to my post. Most shocking is your insult.
“You are an international celebrity whom Nigeria is proud of. Coming to insult me on my Instagram profile with such vulgar words should be beneath you. Yes, I’m aware that you were upset at my appeal to you not to use an international platform, such as the 2026 FIFA World Cup, to give publicity to bandits and terrorists. I am also aware that Peter Obi praised you for doing that, which may have made you feel compelled to defend him.
“I did that because while your intention may be good and you think you are pressuring the government, the actual effect of what you did is to give publicity to the terrorists and help them spread fear, recruit new members, and raise funds.
“Meanwhile, IShowSpeed an American at that same event used the global stage of the World Cup to market Nigeria by wearing the jersey and speak well about Nigeria.”
The controversy stems from Omokri’s earlier criticism of Davido’s participation in World Cup-related activities, where he reportedly questioned the messaging and optics of certain public appearances made on the global stage.
The exchange has since sparked debate across social media, with supporters of both figures weighing in on the appropriateness of Davido’s response and Omokri’s original remarks.
