Real Madrid manager Carlo Ancelotti has agreed to become Brazil’s new head coach, with his appointment set to begin on May 26, immediately after the end of the LaLiga season.
The 65-year-old will become the first permanent foreign manager in Brazil’s history and will lead the team into World Cup qualifiers against Paraguay and Ecuador next month.
The Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF) described the appointment as a “landmark moment of the coming together of two icons,” referencing Brazil’s five World Cup titles and Ancelotti’s decorated managerial career in European football.
Ancelotti, who will be taking on his first international job, departs Madrid after failing to secure a major trophy in his final season. Since returning to the Spanish club in 2021, he has delivered two LaLiga and Champions League doubles, but Sunday’s El Clasico defeat to Barcelona has all but confirmed a trophyless end to his tenure.
Brazil has cycled through four head coaches in the past two-and-a-half years, most recently parting ways with Dorival Junior in March. Ancelotti’s last game in charge of Real Madrid will be against Real Sociedad on May 25, after which he will officially begin his new role.
