The Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG) has rejected claims that its General Overseer, Pastor Enoch Adeboye, protested against the administration of former President Goodluck Jonathan, saying a viral photograph used to support the claim has been taken out of context.
The church made the clarification in a statement issued through its public relations platform on X, amid ongoing online debate over Adeboye’s comments on national issues and the role of religious leaders in public affairs.
According to RCCG, a photograph showing Adeboye holding a placard during a public walk has repeatedly been presented as evidence that he led or participated in a protest against Jonathan’s government.
The church described the claim as false.
RCCG said the photograph was taken during a peaceful nationwide walk organised following a directive from the Christian Association of Nigeria (CAN) during the administration of former President Muhammadu Buhari.
According to the statement, churches across the country were asked to hold peaceful walks after service to draw attention to the killing of Christians and to call on the government to improve security.
“The walk in Ebute Metta, where Pastor Adeboye participated, was part of that nationwide exercise. It was neither organized against President Goodluck Jonathan nor connected in any way to his administration,” the church said.
RCCG added that the image had been recycled years later and presented as evidence of a protest against a different government.
The church said Adeboye’s message during the walk focused on the value of human life and the need to protect innocent Nigerians regardless of religion.
It also pushed back against criticism that the cleric has remained silent on issues affecting the country.
According to RCCG, Adeboye has continued to offer counsel on national matters and has publicly spoken about insecurity and the protection of lives.
The church cited remarks he made during the November 2025 Holy Ghost Service, where he urged authorities to take stronger action against terrorism and insecurity.
“When they eliminate the terrorists, ask them to eliminate their sponsors too,” Adeboye said, according to the statement.
RCCG also dismissed suggestions that it operates as the religious arm of any political party, stating that the church is not involved in partisan politics and that Adeboye does not hold public office.
The church urged members of the public to verify claims concerning Adeboye and RCCG through its official communication channels before sharing them.
“Facts matter. Context matters. Truth matters,” the statement said.
