Clergyman Jacob Irewa allegedly sets his wife ablaze after a domestic dispute in Lokoja, leaving her with severe burns.

A 43-year-old clergyman, identified as Jacob Irewa, has allegedly set his wife, Berida Irawo, ablaze following a domestic dispute in Lokoja, the Kogi State capital.

The incident occurred in the Felele area of the city and has sparked outrage, with residents and the victim’s family demanding justice.

Residents of Oworo Estate in Felele and its environs are still in shock following the alleged attack on Irawo by her husband.

The couple had reportedly been married for four years before the alleged attack.

Irewa allegedly set his wife ablaze after a disagreement at their residence.

Following the incident, angry youths in the area reportedly attempted to lynch the suspect.

Local vigilantes, however, intervened and took him to a secure location before the arrival of the police.

Irewa has explained what transpired before the alleged attack.

Irawo sustained severe burns and is currently receiving treatment at a private hospital in Lokoja.

Speaking from her hospital bed, the victim recounted the ordeal.

A nurse at Honey Gold Hospital, Felele, Victoria Adedayo, also spoke about Irawo’s condition.

The victim’s family has demanded justice and called for appropriate sanctions against the suspect.

Her uncle, Samuel Morito, said the family wants the matter properly investigated and the suspect held accountable.

Religious leaders have also condemned the alleged act.

Apostle Patrick Ojo, founder of Euaggellion Christian Centre, said violence against a spouse is contrary to Christian teachings, which promote love, forgiveness and peaceful resolution of disputes.

The Kogi State Police Command has confirmed the incident to Arise News and said the suspect has been arrested.

The Police Public Relations Officer, Kogi State Command, Salu Afusat Oyiza, said the case has been transferred to the Criminal Investigation Department of the Nigeria Police Force for further investigation and possible prosecution.

The police investigation is expected to determine the circumstances surrounding the incident and establish the appropriate charges against the suspect.
