One person has been killed and several others injured following an attack on the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) Million Man March campaign in Asaba, Delta State.
The attack occurred around midday on Saturday along Nnebisi Road, the city’s main thoroughfare, where armed men wielding axes, machetes and clubs were captured on video smashing the windscreens of NDC-branded campaign vehicles.
One suspect has been confirmed dead, while several NDC supporters sustained injuries of varying degrees, including head wounds reportedly inflicted by the attackers.
In a statement, the Delta State Police Command said it had advised the rally organisers against proceeding with their planned activities following intelligence reports warning of possible violence.
The police, however, alleged that the organisers disregarded the warning and went ahead with the event.
But the Delta State chapter of the NDC, through its Ochei Media Team, denied receiving or defying any intelligence warning.
Describing the attack as political desperation born out of panic, the party called on Governor Sheriff Oborevwori and the Inspector-General of Police to launch a full investigation, apprehend those responsible and ensure the protection of all political actors.
