Nigeria Debunks Rumoured Expulsion of Ambassador To Niger

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs wishes to inform the general public that this information is false and as such should be disregarded.”

The Nigerian government has dispelled the rumour of the expulsion of its ambassador from troubled Niger.

The social media was awash on Saturday with the report that the Nigerian Ambassador in Niger has been expelled by the military administration into the West African countries as a result of Nigerian opposition to the junta’s takeover.

Nigeria’s President, Bola Ahmed Tinubu at being the Chairman of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has been at the forefront of move to get the junta relinquish power back to the democratically elected President Mohamed Bazoum who was upstaged in a coup d’etat.

A signed statement on Saturday by the spokesperson of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Francisca Omayuli read: “The attention of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs has been drawn to news making the rounds on social media that the Nigerian Ambassador to the Republic of Niger, H. E. Mohammed Sani Usman was on Friday, 25th August, 2023 expelled and given 48 hours to leave the country.

“The Ministry of Foreign Affairs wishes to inform the general public that this information is false and as such should be disregarded.

“The Federal Government of Nigeria warns against the circulation of unverified information capable of jeopardizing the ongoing mediation efforts by ECOWAS in the political impasse in Niger.”
