The Nigeria Football Federation has set up a fact-finding committee to investigate the poor performance of the country’s national teams in international competitions.
The move follows the Super Falcons’ failure to qualify for the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup, according to a statement by the NFF Communications Department.
The federation said the committee would examine the “unwholesome poor run” of Nigeria’s national teams, with particular attention to the Super Falcons’ failure to secure a place at next year’s World Cup.
The Super Falcons, who are ten-time Women’s Africa Cup of Nations champions and the current holders, were eliminated from the ongoing tournament in Morocco at the quarter-final stage.
Nigeria then lost 2-1 to South Africa in a playoff for a place in the Inter-Confederations Playoffs scheduled for later this year.
The defeat means Nigeria will miss the 2027 FIFA Women’s World Cup in Brazil, ending its run of appearances at every edition of the competition since its launch in 1991.
The NFF described the development as a major setback for a team that had previously been “the supreme power of African women football”.
Former NFF General Secretary, Ambassador Fanny Amun, MON, will chair the six-member committee.
The other members are former Nigeria U20 coach and president of the Nigeria Football Coaches Association, Ladan Bosso; former Super Falcons captain and FIFA World Cup star, Desire Oparanozie; former Super Eagles captain and AFCON winner, Mutiu Adepoju; and former FIFA referee, Dr Alex Mana.
Chairman of the Sokoto State Football Association, Mallam Mohammed Nasir Sa’idu, will serve as secretary.
The committee is expected to examine the factors behind Nigeria’s recent struggles and provide findings that could guide the federation’s response to the setbacks.
