A series of earthquakes struck China’s northwestern Qinghai province on Tuesday, damaging roads and buildings in several villages, though authorities reported no immediate casualties.
According to the China Earthquake Networks Centre, the strongest tremor, measuring magnitude 5.8, struck Xinghai County at 11:34 a.m. local time, 18 minutes after an initial magnitude 5.7 earthquake. A magnitude 5.0 aftershock was recorded later in the afternoon.
The earthquakes occurred at a depth of 10 kilometres, with the epicentre located in a sparsely populated, high-altitude area about 244 kilometres from Xining, the provincial capital. Residents in Xining reported feeling the tremors.
Preliminary assessments showed that roads and buildings in at least seven nearby villages sustained varying degrees of damage, while the tremors also triggered limited landslides on nearby mountainsides.
Emergency response teams were deployed to the affected area to assess the damage and assist affected communities. Authorities said rescue operations and damage assessments were ongoing as officials continued monitoring the region for additional aftershocks.
