Morocco Aims For $10 Billion AI-Driven GDP Boost By 2030

Morocco aims to boost its GDP by $10 billion by 2030 through AI, creating 50,000 jobs and training 200,000 graduates.

Morocco plans to add 100 billion dirhams ($10 billion) to its GDP through artificial intelligence by 2030, the country’s Minister in charge of digital transition, Amal El Fallah Seghrouchni, announced on Monday. The initiative comes as Morocco steps up investment in AI training programmes, sovereign data centres, and cloud services.

Currently, Morocco’s GDP stands at around $170 billion. The government intends to develop AI centres in partnership with universities and the private sector, while integrating AI solutions into public administration and industry.

The projected GDP growth is expected to stem from expanding domestic data-processing capacity via sovereign data centres, enhancing cloud and fibre-optic infrastructure, and creating an AI-skilled workforce. The plan targets the creation of 50,000 AI-related jobs and the training of 200,000 graduates in AI skills by 2030.

As part of this effort, Morocco signed a partnership with France’s Mistral AI to advance generative AI tools in the country. “We want to turn Morocco into a future excellence hub in AI and data science,” Seghrouchni said.

The government is also preparing AI-specific legislation and has earmarked 11 billion dirhams ($1.2 billion) for its digital transformation strategy from 2024 to 2026, covering AI initiatives and fibre-optic expansion. Additionally, a 500-megawatt renewable energy-powered data centre is planned for Dakhla to enhance national data security and sovereignty.

This strategic push positions Morocco as a leading player in Africa’s growing AI and digital economy sector, aiming to combine technological advancement with sustainable economic growth.
