The Miami Heat have completed one of the biggest moves in NBA history, acquiring Giannis Antetokounmpo from the Milwaukee Bucks in a blockbuster deal involving multiple players and draft picks.
According to The Associated Press, the trade is still awaiting formal NBA approval, but the agreed terms will see Antetokounmpo and Bobby Portis move to Miami in exchange for Tyler Herro, Jaime Jaquez Jr., Kel’el Ware and Kasparas Jakucionis.
Milwaukee will also receive the No. 13 pick in Tuesday night’s NBA Draft, a first round pick swap in 2030, first round selections in 2031 and 2033, and a second round pick in 2033.
The move brings an end to a dramatic saga that intensified in recent days, with the Bucks weighing offers from both Miami and Boston for Antetokounmpo. The Greek superstar leaves Milwaukee after establishing himself as one of the greatest players in franchise history, leading the Bucks to the 2021 NBA championship and earning two MVP awards, 10 All Star selections and nine All NBA honours.
Miami have a history of transforming their fortunes through blockbuster acquisitions. The franchise landed Shaquille O’Neal in 2004, a move that helped deliver the 2006 NBA title. Six years later, the Heat assembled a star-studded trio of LeBron James, Chris Bosh and Dwyane Wade, leading to four consecutive NBA Finals appearances and championships in 2012 and 2013.
Now, the Heat are betting that Antetokounmpo can spark another championship era.
At 31, Antetokounmpo remains one of the league’s elite players despite an injury shortened 2025-26 campaign in which he averaged 27.6 points per game. His career averages stand at 24.1 points and 9.9 rebounds per game, while he has recorded at least 22.9 points per game in each of the last 10 seasons.
Only seven active NBA players have scored more career points than Antetokounmpo, who has amassed 21,531 points.
For years, Milwaukee publicly resisted any suggestion of trading their franchise cornerstone. However, after a disappointing season and the dismissal of head coach Doc Rivers, the organisation ultimately chose a different direction.
“I just think before the draft is a natural time, right, because if Giannis does play somewhere else we’re going to get a lot of assets. You’ve got to get it right,” Bucks co-owner Jimmy Haslam said in May when introducing new head coach Taylor Jenkins.
The trade gives Milwaukee a substantial package of young talent and future draft assets as the franchise begins a new chapter.
For Miami, the acquisition signals an all in pursuit of another championship. Antetokounmpo had often spoken positively about the Heat over the years and shares an agent with Miami star Bam Adebayo, who reportedly remained untouchable throughout negotiations.
