Mexico have turned their attention to a blockbuster FIFA World Cup Round of 16 clash with England after ending a 40-year wait for a knockout-stage victory by defeating Ecuador 2-0.
First-half goals from Julian Quinones and Raul Jimenez secured Mexico’s first World Cup knockout win since the 1986 tournament, setting up a meeting with England at the Azteca Stadium on July 5. The match is expected to be one of the standout ties of the Round of 16, with Mexico hoping to use home support and the high-altitude conditions to their advantage against the Three Lions.
England booked their place after coming from behind to beat DR Congo 2-1, with Harry Kane scoring both goals to complete the comeback.
Mexico will be aiming to reach the World Cup quarter-finals for the first time since hosting the tournament in 1986. However, preparations for the match come amid national mourning after four people died during celebrations following Mexico’s victory over Ecuador, prompting authorities to review security measures ahead of the England clash.
