Marco Rubio has proposed a renewed approach to relations between the United States and Cuba, offering a $100 million package in food and medical assistance while sharply criticising the Cuban government for worsening living conditions in the country.
In a video message directed at the Cuban people on Wednesday, Rubio outlined what he described as an opportunity to forge a new relationship between Washington and Havana. He said the proposed aid would be aimed at addressing shortages of essential supplies, including food and medicine, amid ongoing economic strain in the country.
Rubio, however, placed responsibility for the crisis squarely on Cuba’s leadership, accusing authorities of mismanaging resources and contributing to persistent shortages of electricity, fuel and basic goods.
