Paolo Maldini and Leonardo have resigned from their roles with the Italian Football Federation (FIGC), just 10 days after joining the national team project, following the collapse of negotiations to appoint Andrea Pirlo as Italy’s new head coach.
According to transfer expert; Fabrizio Romano, both men decided to leave the project due to issues involving FIGC president, Giovanni Malagò after Pirlo’s appointment failed to materialise.
Maldini had recently been appointed technical director as part of a major overhaul aimed at rebuilding the Azzurri after their failure to qualify for a third consecutive FIFA World Cup. Leonardo joined the federation as an adviser to the former AC Milan and Italy defender.
Their resignations mark another setback for the FIGC, which is now left searching for both a new technical leadership team and a permanent head coach after Pirlo withdrew from consideration.
