Liverpool have confirmed that head coach Arne Slot has left the club with immediate effect, less than 2 years after taking charge and a season after guiding the club to the Premier League title.
The Dutchman delivered league success in his first campaign at Anfield during the 2024-25 season. However, Liverpool finished fifth this term, prompting the club’s leadership to conclude that a change in direction was necessary.
Despite maintaining support for Slot during a difficult campaign that included a run of 9 defeats in 12 matches across all competitions, Liverpool’s hierarchy decided to make a managerial change following the end of the season.
Slot’s style of play came under increasing scrutiny during the campaign, with criticism centred on a perceived lack of attacking intensity. The club is now understood to be seeking a more aggressive and attack-minded approach as it begins the search for a new manager.
Among those linked with the vacancy is former AFC Bournemouth manager Andoni Iraola, who is leaving the club following the expiration of his contract after leading Bournemouth to a sixth-place finish and Champions League qualification.
Liverpool’s decision comes despite recognition of Slot’s achievements since succeeding Jürgen Klopp in May 2024. He signed a three-year contract after a successful spell with Dutch club Feyenoord.
Last season proved challenging for Liverpool, who finished with 60 points, their lowest tally in a decade, while suffering 19 defeats in all competitions. The campaign was also affected by injuries to key players, including Alexander Isak, and the aftermath of the death of striker Diogo Jota in July.
In a joint statement issued on Saturday, Liverpool’s owners said: “That this was a difficult decision for us to make as a club goes without saying.
“The contribution Arne has made to Liverpool FC in the time that he has been with us has been significant, meaningful and — most importantly of all to supporters and ourselves — successful.
“At the same time, we have collectively come to the conclusion that change is necessary in order for the club to keep moving forward.
“As such, we can only wish Arne well in the next stage of his coaching career, with our expectation being that he will continue to be successful. We do so in the knowledge that his Liverpool legacy is intact and will become yet more meaningful in the years and decades to come.
“Nevertheless, the conclusion we have come to is built on a belief that the team’s trajectory is best addressed through a change of direction. That does not diminish the work Arne has done here, or the respect we have for him. Nor is it a reflection of his talents. Rather, it is indicative of the need for a different approach.”
Liverpool are expected to accelerate the search for Slot’s successor as preparations begin for the new season.
