Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Thursday that it was too early to discuss the agenda for a possible meeting between Russian President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump, as Moscow had yet to decide whether Putin would attend a December G20 meeting in Florida.
The comments followed US Secretary of State Marco Rubio’s announcement that Washington had invited Putin to attend the G20 summit in Miami, Florida, creating an opportunity for the Russian and US presidents to meet. Rubio said the invitation was intended to give Putin an opportunity to engage with Trump and other world leaders.
Peskov said Russia was grateful for the invitation and would consider it through diplomatic channels before deciding whether Putin would attend.
The possible meeting comes as Trump continues efforts to advance negotiations aimed at ending the war in Ukraine. However, Moscow has said there are currently no conditions for moving to a peace negotiating process, while maintaining that it remains open to talks.
Peskov also reiterated Moscow’s position that any negotiations should result in a lasting peace agreement rather than simply establish a temporary halt to the fighting.
