King Charles III has told US lawmakers that the country’s actions carry greater weight than its words, as he addressed a joint session of the United States Congress.
The British monarch delivered the speech during a state visit to Washington, where he met Donald Trump at the White House alongside Queen Camilla. He used the address to speak about global challenges, security and cooperation between both nations.
He said the United States plays a key role on the global stage and stressed that its decisions have far-reaching impact.
“America’s words carry weight and meaning… the actions of this great nation matter even more,” he said.
The King warned that global problems cannot be handled by one country alone and called for continued cooperation between allies.
“The challenges we face are too great for any one nation to bear alone,” he told lawmakers.
He also spoke about ongoing conflicts and the need for unity, pointing to support for Ukraine and the importance of maintaining defence ties between both countries.
The King said the long-standing relationship between the United Kingdom and the United States has been built over centuries but must continue to adapt in a changing world.
He ended his address with a call for both countries to remain outward-looking and committed to shared values.
