US rapper Kanye West is set to perform in Tirana in July, after Albania’s Prime Minister Edi Rama confirmed the event, drawing mixed reactions.
The concert is scheduled for July 11 in Albania’s capital. Officials say a temporary venue is being prepared to hold about 60,000 people. The government says the event will be funded through ticket sales and aims to attract more visitors to Albania.
Authorities say the show could boost hotels, travel and local businesses. They also see it as part of a plan to bring more global acts to the country.
The announcement has raised concerns in some quarters. Critics point to West’s past statements and behaviour. Some of his shows in Europe have been cancelled in recent months following public backlash.
Supporters say the concert should focus on music, while officials insist the goal is economic growth and global attention.
