The Nigerian Correctional Service (NCoS), Kano State Command, has intercepted a 40-year-old man allegedly attempting to smuggle suspected Indian hemp into the Medium Security Custodial Centre, Kurmawa, Kano.
The suspect, who resides in Janguza Quarters, was apprehended on Sunday around noon by officers of the Armed Squad Unit while allegedly attempting to throw the substance into the facility.
The command’s Public Relations Officer, CSC Musbahu Kofarnassarawa, disclosed this in a statement issued on Monday, saying the officers acted swiftly following their vigilance.
He said the operation was carried out under the supervision of the Commander of the Armed Squad Unit, CSC Usman M. Sale.
The Controller of Corrections in Kano State, Ahmed Yusuf-Lakpene, commended the officers for preventing the substance from entering the custodial facility.
According to the statement, Yusuf-Lakpene “commended the officers for their vigilance, professionalism and commitment to maintaining security in custodial facilities.”
He also reiterated the command’s position against the introduction of prohibited materials into correctional facilities, stressing its zero-tolerance stance towards such activities.
The suspect has since been handed over to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) for further investigation and necessary action.
Yusuf-Lakpene urged members of the public to desist from attempts to introduce illicit substances and other prohibited materials into custodial centres.
He reaffirmed the command’s commitment to strengthening security measures across its facilities to maintain a safe environment for the reformation and rehabilitation of inmates.
