Hundreds of residents in Mozambique’s Buzi District are waiting at the Guara Guara administrative post to be evacuated after their houses were destroyed by Cyclone Eloise.

Some residents who spoke to a local daily Noticias say they have been queuing for three days now.

The National Institute for Disaster Risk Management and Reduction (INGD) says the operations are being carried out in a way that ensures everyone’s safety.

Some of those being evacuated are being taken to private homes while others are taken to accommodation centres.

The INGD head Luisa Meque said people need to evacuate from risk areas early, Noticias reports.

Evacuations from the village started on 20 January, three days before the district was hit by Cyclone Eloise with winds between 120 km/h (74mph) and 150 km/h and heavy rains that exceeded 200mm (7 inches) in 12 hours.

The INGD says many people ignored the warnings and the first evacuees were taken to Guara Guara almost by force, Noticias reports.

More and more families keep arriving at the administrative post and it is unclear how long it will take to evacuate them.
