Speaking to journalists upon arriving for a meeting of NATO defence ministers in Brussels, Pistorius revealed that the German minesweeper Fulda and the support vessel Mosel were currently making their way through the Suez Canal en route to the Red Sea.
The deployment comes as discussions continue over maritime security in the strategically important Strait of Hormuz, a key shipping route for global energy supplies.
Pistorius explained that any German involvement in a future minesweeping operation would require the consent of both Iran and Oman, whose territorial waters border the strait.
He further stressed that Berlin’s participation would also depend on the outcome of continuing diplomatic engagements between Iran and the United States.
According to the minister, the movement of the two ships is intended to ensure Germany is prepared should an international security mission in the region receive the necessary political and diplomatic backing.
The Strait of Hormuz remains one of the world’s most sensitive maritime corridors, and developments in the area are being closely monitored by NATO allies and other international partners.
