Nigeria’s telecommunications sector continues to record strong growth as consumers maintain high data usage despite ongoing complaints about service quality and increasing costs.
Speaking in an interview on ARISE News, investment research analyst Gbemi Adelokiki said consumer reliance on telecom services remains a key driver of industry growth.
“Regardless of the complaints, people are still going to buy airtime… people are still going to buy data,” he stated.
He explained that digital connectivity has become essential in everyday life, making it difficult for consumers to cut back on usage even when dissatisfied with service quality.
“Imagine all of us like that for 24 hours… we would go crazy,” he said, emphasizing the extent of dependence on mobile and internet services.
Adelokiki noted that this consistent demand continues to translate into increased subscriber numbers and higher data consumption across networks.
“We still saw increased penetration, more active users… more data subscribers,” he added.
According to him, the sector’s growth trajectory is further supported by expanding access to mobile devices and internet services across the country.
“People that are not using phones yet will eventually have to get phones… people that do not have access to the internet will eventually have to,” he said.
He also pointed out that telecom operators are responding to rising demand by increasing investment in infrastructure and technology.
“We will also see the companies… continue to invest in their technology,” he noted.
Despite concerns over tariffs and service delivery, Adelokiki maintained that consumer behavior is unlikely to shift significantly in the near term.
“It’s telecommunications… we can only see growth,” he said.
Adelokiki concluded that the essential nature of data services will continue to sustain telecom growth, as consumers prioritize connectivity regardless of cost or service challenges.
