Explosion At Burundi Military Depot Triggers Panic In Capital

Explosion at Burundi military depot sparks panic in Bujumbura, with residents fleeing as army blames fire on electrical fault.

Residents near a military camp in Bujumbura fled in panic on Tuesday night after explosions erupted from an army ammunition depot in the Musaga area.

According to army spokesperson Gaspard Baratuza, the incident was caused by a fire triggered by a short circuit in the ammunition storage facility, which led to multiple detonations.

The blaze, which produced massive explosions, was visible from several miles away, with videos circulating on social media showing residents fleeing nearby neighbourhoods.

Baratuza dismissed speculation that the explosion was the result of an attack, reassuring the public that the situation was not linked to any hostile activity.

He urged residents of Gasekebuye, Kanyosha, Kinindo and surrounding areas to remain calm and avoid panic as authorities worked to contain the situation.

Local officials later confirmed that calm had been restored, while some displaced children were temporarily sheltered at Buhonga Catholic Parish awaiting reunification with their families.

The incident has raised concerns over safety at military installations, though authorities maintain that the explosion was accidental.
