A wave of public concern in Edo State is prompting fresh attention to the treatment of students from Ambrose Alli University (AAU), Ekpoma, following their arrest after weekend protests against insecurity.
Outrage intensified on Monday after a video surfaced showing dozens of students crammed into the back of a truck en route to Ubiaja prison. The students were earlier remanded by a Benin High Court in connection with protests that turned violent on Saturday.
Many of those arrested insist they were picked up from their hostels around 3 a.m. on Sunday and had no involvement in the demonstrations. Their claims sparked widespread calls for justice from students, civil society groups, and concerned residents.
In response, the Edo State Police Command issued a statement clarifying that no peaceful protesters were arrested.
According to the police, 52 suspects were detained for alleged acts of vandalism, assault, and public disorder, including a reported attack on a traditional ruler and his wife. The command maintained that peaceful demonstrators were asked to return home.
Adding to the response, the state government acknowledged public concerns, reiterating its commitment to restoring safety and addressing insecurity. Officials say the voices of the people are being heard and decisive action is underway.
