Presidential spokesperson Sunday Dare has defended President Bola Tinubu’s decision to embark on a three-week annual working leave, saying the break would allow him to “refuel” after months of intensive engagement with state matters.
Dare spoke with journalists on Sunday after seeing off the President at the presidential wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja.
According to him, Tinubu had spent the past six to seven months dealing with major state matters, including decisions concerning Nigeria’s security and economy.
“The President has had several months—six, seven months—of being engaged with state matters. We’ve seen monumental changes, monumental decisions taken with our security, with our economy and so many other things as pertains to the running of the affairs of this country,” Dare said.
He added that the commencement of the campaign season ahead of the 2027 elections would bring several more months of intense political activities for the President, while governance would continue.
Dare said it was therefore important for Tinubu to take the opportunity to recharge ahead of the period.
“And at this point, it’s important that the President also refuels,” he said.
The presidential spokesperson, however, stressed that Tinubu’s three-week leave would be a working break, with the President continuing to receive briefings and attend to important state matters.
“And even though he’s going on leave, we know that he’ll be engaged with state matters on a daily basis. He will receive briefings from his ministers, from the service chiefs as the case may be, and from every other person who is handling very key decisions in our country,” Dare said.
