Singer Mariah Carey has won a legal battle against her brother, Morgan Carey, after a judge dismissed his defamation lawsuit over claims in her 2020 memoir, The Meaning of Mariah Carey.
According to Billboard, the judge ruled on Monday that Morgan had failed to meet the legal requirements to sue his sister.
Morgan filed the lawsuit over passages in the memoir that suggested he had sold cocaine and been violent during their childhood.
The judge found that Morgan had not sufficiently established actual malice by Mariah and failed to provide evidence that the singer knowingly made false statements about him in the book.
Mariah’s lawyer, John Rosenberg, told Billboard that the singer welcomed the ruling.
“Ms. Carey is gratified that the Court recognized that her memoir addresses significant issues of public interest and dismissed her brother’s defamation claims in their entirety,” he said.
Morgan’s lawyer told the publication that he planned to appeal the dismissal.
The ruling follows years of estrangement between the siblings, with Morgan’s lawsuit challenging claims made in the singer’s memoir, published in 2020.
