Colombia’s Foreign Minister Laura Sarabia Resigns Over Passport Dispute

Colombia’s Foreign Minister Laura Sarabia has resigned over disagreement with the government’s handling of a national passport printing contract.

Colombia’s Foreign Minister, Laura Sarabia, announced her resignation on Thursday, citing disagreements with recent government decisions regarding the country’s passport printing process.

Her departure adds to the mounting political turbulence facing President Gustavo Petro’s administration.

The resignation stems from a contentious shift in a government contract concerning the printing of national passports.

Sarabia, who openly opposed the change, expressed her disapproval in a post on X (formerly Twitter), stating, “In the last few days, decisions have been made that I do not agree with, adding that she had decided to resign out of “personal coherence and institutional respect.”

Sarabia had been appointed Colombia’s top diplomat in January, after previously serving as Petro’s chief of staff. Her exit highlights growing internal tensions within the leftist government, particularly regarding administrative and procurement practices.
