Christa Pike Reveals Suffering After Failed Tennessee Execution

Christa Pike describes ongoing physical pain and emotional trauma a month after surviving a failed lethal injection execution in Tennessee.

Tennessee death row inmate Christa Pike has revealed that she continues to experience severe pain and difficulty speaking a month after surviving a botched lethal injection, while criticising officials over what she described as incompetence.

Pike made the disclosure in her first public statement since the unsuccessful execution attempt, recounting the physical injuries and emotional distress she has endured since the incident.

In a statement released on Friday, the 50-year-old said she had accepted that she was going to die and never expected to survive beyond her scheduled execution date. However, she later regained consciousness in a hospital bed, confused and alone, after the execution attempt failed.

Describing her condition, Pike said she has continued to experience persistent pain in several parts of her body and still struggles to speak.

“There hasn’t been a moment since that night when I haven’t been in pain. My body hurts. My arms hurt. My hands hurt. My throat hurts. I still struggle to speak. And the pain isn’t just physical. There is pain in my mind and in my soul,” she said.

The failed execution took place on September 30, when officials made two attempts to administer the lethal drug pentobarbital but were unsuccessful in carrying out the execution.

Pike was sentenced to death for the 1995 murder of her 19years old  classmate, Colleen Slemmer. She was 18 at the time of the killing, which she committed alongside her boyfriend after the pair tortured Slemmer.

Reacting to the incident, Pike expressed frustration over the handling of the execution, describing it as a consequence of incompetence. She also acknowledged the suffering of her victim’s family and said she continued to think about their loss.

“I’m deeply hurt by the incompetence that has put so many people in this terrible position. I continue to think about my victim’s family and the terrible pain and loss they have endured,” she said.

Following the failed execution, Tennessee Governor Bill Lee ordered an investigation into the incident and postponed another lethal injection scheduled for later in the year. The state’s prison chief also resigned.

Despite her ordeal, Pike expressed appreciation to the medical personnel who treated her and the individuals who offered her encouragement and support.

She acknowledged that she remains uncertain about what the future holds but said she is concentrating on her recovery and taking each day as it comes.

“I don’t know why I survived that night. I don’t know what comes next. Some days, finding hope is harder than others. For now, I am trying to heal, one day at a time. And I am holding on to the love and kindness of so many people who have reminded me that I am not alone,” she said.

According to her lawyers, the failed execution left Pike with burns and blisters on her arms. They also disclosed that she remained unconscious and required a ventilator during the first few days of her hospitalisation.

Meanwhile, medical professionals and lethal injection experts have raised concerns about a possible malfunction involving the intravenous line. They suspect the problem may have prevented the execution drug from entering her bloodstream, causing it to accumulate in the surrounding tissue instead.

Following the incident, Pike’s lawyers appealed to Governor Lee, asking him to commute her death sentence to life imprisonment.

However, Lee suggested that her sentence would likely remain unchanged unless the courts ruled otherwise.

“I suspect her sentence will be the same as before unless determined otherwise by the courts,” he told reporters this week.

Pike’s Friday statement was dictated to her legal team from the infirmary at the prison where she is being held.

She was initially taken to hospital immediately after the failed execution before being transferred back to the Debra K. Johnson Rehabilitation Center.
