Caterpillar has announced plans to invest roughly $1 billion in its North Carolina operations as it moves to expand manufacturing capacity for its compact equipment business.
The project will include a new manufacturing plant in Sanford, North Carolina, which is expected to increase production of compact track loaders and telehandlers.
Rod Shurman, President of Caterpillar’s Construction Industries Group, said the investment would help the company better serve customers as demand for compact equipment continues to rise.
“With demand for compact equipment continuing to grow, we are stepping up our investment to better serve this expanding customer segment,” Shurman said.
Compact track loaders and telehandlers are used across several industries, including construction, landscaping, agriculture and material handling. The expansion is expected to strengthen Caterpillar’s ability to meet rising demand in these markets.
The Sanford facility will also support Caterpillar’s US manufacturing operations and is expected to create jobs in areas including automation, robotics, digital manufacturing and production systems.
The investment comes as Caterpillar responds to stronger demand for construction equipment, with activity in areas such as data-centre development contributing to increased requirements for equipment and related infrastructure across the United States.
