A24’s Backrooms has become the studio’s highest-grossing film of all time, reaching a worldwide total of $212.6m within ten days of release.
The film overtook Marty Supreme, which had previously held the record with a global total of $191.2m, according to studio estimates.
Directed by Kane Parsons and based on his viral online IP, Backrooms ranked third globally over the weekend, adding $50.1m across 52 international territories.
The film earned $25.9m in its second weekend in North America, a sharp 68% drop from its debut, while international markets contributed a further $24.1m.
Despite the decline, the film delivered strong regional performances, including a standout $2m opening in Spain, where it topped the box office by a wide margin.
In Latin America, Backrooms emerged as A24’s highest-grossing title in the region with $24.2m, while in the United Kingdom it recorded the studio’s best-ever opening weekend and the strongest horror debut of the year.
The film also set records in several Asian markets, including Malaysia and the Philippines, where it posted the strongest opening weekend for an A24 release.
In Australia and New Zealand, Backrooms surpassed Marty Supreme to become A24’s highest-grossing title in the region with $7.9m, while South Korea delivered a relatively modest 11% drop, bringing its total to $5.7m.
The film’s global performance has been attributed to strong youth turnout, with more than 80% of its audience reportedly under the age of 35.
Focus Features’ Obsession also crossed a major milestone, reaching $224.6m worldwide to become the Universal Classics label’s highest-grossing title, overtaking Downton Abbey.
