Aston Villa secured qualification for next season’s UEFA Champions League after beating Liverpool 4-2 at Villa Park, while the visitors were left facing uncertainty over their own place in Europe’s elite competition.
A second-half brace from Ollie Watkins, alongside goals from Morgan Rogers and John McGinn, guaranteed fourth-placed Villa one of the Premier League’s five Champions League spots.
Liverpool, who sit fifth, remain under pressure heading into the final weekend of the season, with Bournemouth and Brighton still mathematically capable of overtaking them.
Villa entered the match knowing they still had another route into the Champions League through next week’s Europa League final against Freiburg, but Unai Emery’s side removed any doubt with an emphatic home performance.
The result marks another milestone in Villa’s resurgence under Unai Emery, who guided the club back into Europe’s top competition for the first time in 41 years two seasons ago. Villa can now turn full attention to Wednesday’s Europa League final in Istanbul, where they will chase a first major trophy in three decades.
Liverpool started brightly and thought they had taken the lead early on when Cody Gakpo found the net, only for the effort to be ruled out for offside. Villa goalkeeper Emiliano Martínez also denied Dominik Szoboszlai with a long-range save.
Villa gradually settled and broke the deadlock three minutes before halftime when Rogers curled a precise finish beyond Giorgi Mamardashvili after a well-worked corner routine.
Virgil van Dijk equalised for Liverpool shortly after the break with a header, but Villa quickly regained control as the match opened up.
Watkins restored Villa’s lead after capitalising on a costly slip from Szoboszlai during a counterattack before adding his second in the 73rd minute from close range after Mamardashvili produced two initial saves.
McGinn added a fourth late on with a curling strike into the far corner before Van Dijk grabbed a stoppage-time goal for Liverpool.
Villa will finish their league campaign away to Manchester City on May 24, while Liverpool travel to Brentford needing a result to secure their Champions League place.
